You’ve heard of the world’s first vegan football club, Forest Green Rovers, now it’s time to meet the world’s first all-vegan rugby club – the Green Gazelles.
Founded by Brendon Bale, a passionate vegan who wanted to combine his love for rugby with his vegan ethics, the Green Gazelle’s aim to promote the benefits of a plant-based diet on the rugby field.
Realising that there are a number of top-performing vegan rugby players at the tops of their games providing what can be achieved on a plant-based diet, Bale set about contacting a range of rugby players from amateur to professional to see whether he could make his dreams of founding an all-vegan rugby club a reality.
According to Bale, the club has been receiving interest from well-known names. In a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living, Bale said: “The squad is already forming nicely with well-known chef Gaz Oakley, professional player Darren Dawidiuk, vegan coach David Cleary and many more showing a keen interest.
“We will be formed as an invitational rugby 7s team to start competing in tournaments across the UK, Belgium, Germany and Netherlands but with the aspiration to plays 15s competitively too in the future.”
The next move for the Green Gazelle’s is to find sponsors to feature on the clubs clothing, players to represent their jersey, support staff to help build the team and the vegan community to share the word so that they can become a completive club on the rugby scene fielding a team made of plant-based athletes.
