What is mulled wine?

Mulled wine is a traditional wine-based drink, traditionally served around Christmastime. It’s a warm, lightly spiced drink which is often served at festive events and Christmas markets.

Mulled wine can be bought bottled and ready to heat and drink, but a freshly made batch of homemade mulled wine offers a richer, well-rounded flavour and aroma that can’t be beaten.

Is mulled wine vegan?

Not all wine is vegan, so not all mulled wine is vegan either.

When making your own, ensure you select a vegan-friendly red wine (a rich, full-bodied wine is best), and use vegan fruits and spices to flavour your wine.

Most spices will be vegan by default, but be aware that some oranges and lemons may not be vegan. Opt for unwaxed, uncoated fruits for your vegan mulled wine.

Does mulled wine contain alcohol?

Mulled wine is alcoholic. It is lightly warmed which can cause some of the alcohol to evaporate, but this is unlikely to have a noticeable effect on the overall alcohol content of your drink.

This vegan mulled wine can be made non-alcoholic by using alcohol-free red wine in place of regular wine. This will give the drink a fruitier, tarter flavour overall but makes a delicious festive drink option for guests who are abstaining from alcohol.

If, however, you are looking to make your mulled wine a little stronger you can add a splash of brandy to the mixture. Whiskey, rum, or bourbon also work well with the robust flavours of the mulled wine.
