Is popcorn the perfect snack food? It’s versatile, light, easy to make, and packs a satisfying crunch, so we think it is!
Popcorn can be flavoured in many different ways and works with sweet or savoury seasonings. This paprika popcorn gives the popcorn a strong spicy flavour that pairs well with a margarita or cerveza on a Friday night!
For a super sultry snack, try using smoked paprika to coat your popcorn with a deeper, smoky flavour.
Is popcorn a healthy snack?
While it’s not exactly filled with nutrients, popcorn is generally a healthy snack as part of a balanced diet as it is a whole grain and relatively low in fat and high in fibre. It’s also very filling with a low energy density, so can be ideal for those who need to reduce their intake of calories.
Adding fats, salts, and sugars to popcorn while cooking can affect the overall nutritional value, so it’s important to be aware of how your popcorn is flavoured if you need to watch your intake of any of these. However, healthy fats are an important inclusion in most people’s diets, so there’s no harm in adding flavour to your snack in a way that works for you.
How else can I use popcorn?
Almost any flavour could be added to your popcorn in the same way as paprika. Try experimenting with adding your favourite flavours to the melted butter – sweet, savoury, or both!
Popcorn could also be used to make a batch of larger snacks, like these chocolate and nut butter clusters. You could even coat your popcorn clusters fully in melted chocolate and spoon into cupcake cases to cool, like a popcorn cornflake cake.
It also makes a great topping. You could sprinkle sweet or salty popcorn over cakes and desserts, like in this Biscoff cheesecake recipe. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even try using popcorn as a savoury topping on soup or salad, in place of croutons.
Did you know that popcorn can also be ground up into crumbs? Why not try using it in place of breadcrumbs in this popcorn ‘chicken’ recipe for a double popcorn treat!

Ingredients
Method
Ingredients
(Servings: 2)
- 1.5 1.5 tbsp vegetable oil
- 62.5 62.5 g popcorn kernels
- 1.5 1.5 tbsp dairy-free butter
- 0.75 0.75 tsp paprika
- 0.375 0.375 tsp salt
Method
- Pour the oil into a very large pan, over a medium-high heat. Add the kernels to the pan and cover with the lid.
- Wait for the kernels to start popping, then shake the pan gently every now and then to keep the kernels moving. When the popping slows to 2-3 seconds apart, remove the pan from the heat.
- In a small bowl, melt the butter in the microwave. Stir in the paprika and salt. Use a spoon to drizzle the mixture over the popcorn, stirring as you go so that it coats everything evenly.
- Pour into bowls or bags and serve.
