What are pinwheels?
Pinwheels can be both savoury and sweet.
Savoury pinwheels are often filled with sandwich fillings like ham and cheese. These are very popular in Italy, where fillings might consist of ingredients like cured meats, vegetables and cream cheese.
However, sweet pinwheels are also a very popular staple in many different cuisines, and are often eaten for breakfast. They are then filled with things like fruit, purees, jams and chocolate.
What is puff pastry?
Puff pastry is a type of dough that is made up of lots of layers of pastry.
The dough is light and crispy once it’s baked and it can be used for both sweet and savoury dishes.
Usually, puff pastry is made from butter, salt, water and flour and doesn’t contain any rising agents. This is so the pastry is crispy and flaky, rather than light and fluffy.
Is puff pastry vegan?
Sometimes.
Puff pastry is usually made with dairy ingredients like butter.
However, many store-bought puff pastries are accidentally vegan because they use non-dairy alternatives to give the pastry a longer shelf life.
Be sure to check the ingredients of the puff pastry you’re buying to make sure it’s vegan.
Jus-Rol is the most popular brand of accidentally vegan puff pastry.
