Alicia Silverstone has shone the spotlight on veganism once more, this time in her new murder mystery film Reptile on Netflix.

In the movie, Alicia stars opposite Benicio Del Toro, who plays police detective Tom Nichols. She is his wife Judy Nichols.

During one scene, the couple attends the birthday party of Tom’s colleague Robert Allen.

As everyone sings Happy Birthday, and Robert blows out the candles, his wife says: “Judy made this cake, everyone, and it is all vegan.”

Robert then adds: “No animals were harmed in the making of this cake.”

Before Netflix

This is far from the first time Alicia has brought attention to the vegan cause: she spoke out about veganism and animal rights on numerous occasions before mentioning it in her Netflix film.

In an interview with the Simply Vegan podcast, she revealed that ditching animal products is ‘the best thing that ever happened to [her]’.

Among the benefits of her lifestyle is the special connection she’s developed with her son Bear by raising him vegan.

The two have cooked together since Bear was young, which Alicia purposefully did to get her son excited about eating a plant-based diet.

She explained: “I think having them cook with you is really helpful if they are interested, you know, involving them in whatever process.”

Furthermore, involving her son in the process allows him to understand how food is foraged and produced she said.

Advocacy

As well as speaking out about veganism, Alicia has also been involved in different advocacy projects, collaborations with organisations including PETA.

Last year, she partnered the animal rights charity for a campaign promoting vegan fashion.

For the action, she stripped naked, as she urged consumers to opt for animal-free materials made from cactus, apples, or mushrooms, instead of traditional leather.

The striking image appeared on a billboard in New York’s Time Square.

“I never, ever, get naked in TV, in film, nothin’ … But I’ve done it for PETA ’cause that’s how much it matters to me,” the star told the charity.

“The amount of resources, water, food, oil for transport, the amount of energy that goes into making leather is extraordinary. It’s just not sustainable. The Earth can’t handle it.”
