Try your hand at making your very own vegan yellow split pea burgers with this simple – yet delicious – recipe.

Yellow split peas are perfect when cooking on a budget, as they are very cheap and contain a good amount of complete protein.

These burgers are great in a bun, or if made smaller, can add an extra bit of bite to a salad!

Do I have to soak yellow split peas before cooking?

Similar to red lentils, it is not essential to soak yellow split peas before cooking. The legumes can be cooked by simply boiling them in a covered saucepan for 20 minutes or until they are tender.

We do recommend rinsing yellow split peas before boiling them to remove excess starch or dirt particles.

Are yellow split peas a good source of protein?

Yellow split peas are naturally high in plant protein and other essential nutrients like fibre and potassium.

Just 100 grams of yellow split peas can provide 25 grams of complete protein.

  • 0.25 0.25 Tbsp oil
  • 0.25 0.25 clove garlic, pureed
  • 0.25 0.25 tsp dried chilli flakes
  • 0.25 0.25 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 0.25 0.25 white onion
  • 0.5 0.5 tsp Garam Masala
  • 62.5 62.5 g yellow split peas - cooked to packet instructions
  • 1.25 1.25 Tbsp plain flour

Method

  1. Add one teaspoon of oil to a frying pan over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic in the pan for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add the garam masala and chilli, and sauté for a further 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add this mix to a bowl with the split peas, soy sauce, and plain flour.
  4. Mash together with a fork until a coarse dough is formed.
  5. Split the dough into 4 and shape each piece into a patty.
  6. Heat the remainder of the oil in a frying pan and cook each patty for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned and cooked thoroughly.
  7. Serve inside whichever vegan-friendly buns you wish, and enjoy with your favourite toppings.

Each 110g serving provides:

4.4g Fat, 0.3g Saturates, 25g Carbohydrate, 3.3g Sugars, 6g Fibre, 7.1g Protein, 0.57g Salt.
