A vegan passenger has slammed a major airline following a gruelling six-hour flight.

Motivational speaker and volunteer attorney Juanita Headley recently flew from Ghana to London with KLM; a journey exceeding 7,000 km.

Despite allegedly requesting a complimentary hot meal on board, Headley claims she was first served some pineapple, tangerine, and nuts.

A few hours later, she said crew gave her a ‘cold vegan wrap, a banana and an additional bowl of nuts’.

‘Unacceptable’

According to reports, Headley described the service as a ‘joke’.

“In this day and age, where veganism isn’t a new phenomena, it’s unacceptable that a six-hour long haul flight don’t carry a few extra meals for situations like this,” she added.

“Or at a minimum make sure the vegetarian meal is also vegan. That would make life very simple for crew and passengers.”

How to fly as a vegan passenger

Vegan meals on flights have rapidly gained in popularity, with airlines such as Emirates recently launching a multimillion-dollar investment into vegan options.

However, it is always worth checking with your airline in advance as to whether it can cater for your dietary needs.

On its website, KLM states it will only carry a ‘limited number’ of vegetarian meals on board, and advises customers to reserve a veggie or vegan meal at least 24 hours before departure.

Many vegans also choose to bring on snacks and food they have prepared themselves as a backup option.
