Food giant behind vegan Babybel partners startup to develop new plant-based cheese featuring postbiotic cultured protein

Food giant Bel has partnered startup Superbrewed Food in a bid to pioneer plant-based food innovation using its postbiotic cultured protein.

Startup Superbrewed said it is 'honoured to partner with Bel Group to lead the industry in the application of highly scalable alternative proteins for cheese'.

Food giant Bel Group has partnered nutrition and health startup Superbrewed Food in a bid to ‘pioneer the development of dairy and plant-based food innovations’.

The major conglomerate, which owns brands including Babybel, Laughing Cow, and Boursin, says it wants to accelerate R&D on biomass fermentation.

According to the company, Superbrewed Food’s technology can be implemented for ‘nutritional, environmental, and sensory advantages…for the benefit of people and the planet’.

Its Postbiotic Cultured Protein, a nutrient-rich protein ingredient made from microflora, contains all nine essential amino acids.

Other nutritional advantages include it being a source of five B-vitamins, including a full day’s supply of B-12, and of six essential minerals, such as iron, phosphorus and magnesium.

Bel Group says its goal is to further the advancement of vegan cheese alternatives and roll out a full range of cheeses using the ingredient.

Postbiotic cultured protein

In a press release to Vegan Food & Living, Bel Group Chief Venture Officer Caroline Sorlin said: Pursuing our mission to offer healthy snacks for all, Bel innovates to support the changes in nutritional needs and meet the challenges of a sustainable diet for an ever-growing world population.

“We are very happy to enter this exclusive collaboration, which is testament to our pioneering role and acceleration on disruptive technologies.”

Bel Group Research and Application Director Anne Pitkowski added: “We are accelerating on biomass fermentation at the R&D level for its environmental, nutritional and accessibility benefits, without compromising on taste and pleasure. Thus, we are very happy to work hand-in-hand with best-in-class startup Superbrewed Food and to be able to offer promising product innovations to consumers.”

And Superbrewed Food CEO Bryan Tracy, PhD, said: “We’re honored to partner with Bel Group to lead the industry in the application of highly scalable alternative proteins for cheese.
