This jerk spice mix is full of Jamaican flavour and will be sure to bring fiery flavour to all your favourite dishes.

It’s easy to make and perfect to keep on hand to add to any jerk recipe in a single step.

The history of jerk seasoning

It’s believed that jerk seasoning originated in Jamaica in the 1700s, when a group of people, who were being kept as slaves, escaped and hid in the Blue Mountains of the country. The group was later known as the Maroons.

Living in the mountains, food was in short supply, and so whatever food the Maroons could gather from the forest they would have to carefully preserve.

To do this, they’d cover the food in salt, peppers and spices, and then wrap it in leaves, before eventually barbecuing it.

This original mix of spices and salts evolved over time to become the moreish and flavour-rich combination we know today – and has become a favourite in vegan kitchens across the globe!

How to use jerk spice mix

Jerk seasoning works well as a dry rub for veggies and meat alternatives, and is great for using in this way when barbecuing or grilling foods. If you need a seasoning that sticks a little better, you could add soy sauce or vinegar to your mix to create a jerk paste, like in this Jamaican Jerk Bowl recipe.

It also works well if you add it into a saucy recipe, like this Jerk-style Sweet Potato Curry. All sorts of stews, curries, and even stir fries can be spiced up with this Jamaican seasoning!
