Hidden sources of wheat to look our for in ingredients
Aside from obvious products such as bread, pasta, and anything that clearly says ‘gluten’ on the ingredient list, there are some pesky ingredients that can cause confusion when shopping.
The list below includes just some of the things to check what you should be looking out for on bottles, packets and boxes that may indicate a product contains gluten.
Some common ingredients to avoid include:
- Malt, malt flavour, malt extract, malt vinegar
- Ale, barley, beer
- Soy sauce
- Modified starch (unless the source is gluten-free)
- Anything with the words “wheat,” “barley,” or “rye”
By law, products containing gluten as an ingredient must list this information clearly, for example in bold lettering.

4. M&S Plant Kitchen Veggie Balls
M&S’ Plant Kitchen brand is one of the best vegan ranges available in major supermarkets, and some of it’s options are also accidentally gluten-free.
One of these is the Plant Kitchen Veggie Balls, made from mushroom and potato fibre rather than wheat. They are the perfect addition to spaghetti or packed into a sub roll with marinara sauce and dairy-free cheese.
