Itsu is launching vegan dessert bao buns in two major UK retailers.

The fast-food chain says it has taken more than 50 trials to perfect the new sweet treats which it recommends serving hot with ice cream or dusted with chocolate powder.

Retailing at an RRP of £3.50 for a pack of four, the frozen buns can be microwaved or steamed, and are ready to eat ‘in minutes’.

Itsu vegan bao buns – where to buy

Itsu’s dessert bao buns come in two varieties: chocolate, made using coconut cream, and salted caramel – which is blended with miso.

The sweet vegan bao buns are already available at Tesco stores throughout the UK. They will also debut in Waitrose at the end of the month.

A ‘historic breakthrough’

According to The Grocer, Itsu founder Julian Metcalfe described the new products as a ‘historic breakthrough’.

He added: “Our dedicated 10-person strong NPD team who have worked tirelessly for one year to create this phenomenal first-to-market new product in supermarkets.

“After more than 50 failed trials…We managed to get rich quality chocolate and miso salted caramel to flow, molten warm, from inside a fluffy bao bun.”
