Walker’s Shortbread is ‘looking at’ launching a vegan version of its iconic flagship biscuit.

The 125-year-old company earned a royal warrant in 2017 to supply the late Queen Elizabeth with its butter-laden treats.

Now, it says a plant-based alternative will help the company ‘move with the times’.

‘Globally accepted’

According to The Telegraph, Managing Director Nicky Walker said:“Vegan is very much something we’re looking at right now.

“We like our product to be globally accepted, whether that means kosher, organic, [or] gluten-free. We want to have our product enjoyed by as many different factions as possible.”

He added: “If there’s an opportunity to develop the brand for certain consumers, it would be foolish not to regard and consider that.”

However, no specific details about the vegan biscuit were announced.

Vegan shortbread

Walker’s Shortbread is late to the vegan biscuit game, with many retailers already stocking plant-based versions.

Back in 2020, cake brand OGGS launched its plant-based millionaire’s shortbread bites into Sainsbury’s and WHSmith stores across the UK.

The melt-in-the-mouth treats are priced at £2.25 for a pack of nine and come in 100 percent recycled plastic packaging.

Similarly, Costa Coffee debuted a vegan-friendly Christmas Tree Shortcake in 2022, as part of its limited-edition Xmas menu.
