Get ahead for your festive mince pie baking by whipping up a batch of homemade vegan mincemeat. This recipe combines fresh Bramley apples with sweet, dried fruits, warming spices and a punch of brandy.

  • 75 75 g Bramley apples, cored and finely chopped
  • 58.333333333333 58.333333333333 g sultanas
  • 58.333333333333 58.333333333333 g soft light brown sugar
  • 37.5 37.5 g vegan suet
  • 37.5 37.5 g golden raisins
  • 37.5 37.5 g dried cranberries
  • 37.5 37.5 g candied mixed peel
  • 0.33333333333333 0.33333333333333 oranges, zest only
  • 10 10 ml brandy or rum (optional)
  • 1 1 star anise
  • 0.5 0.5 tsp ground mixed spice
  • 0.16666666666667 0.16666666666667 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.083333333333333 0.083333333333333 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • You will also need
  • 1 1 x 500ml glass jars

Method

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large ovenproof bowl. Preheat oven to 110°C/225°F/Gas 1⁄2.
  2. Cover the bowl with a plate and place in the oven for 1 hour to melt the suet. When the cooking time is up, remove the bowl from the oven and stir really well a few times, so that everything is fully coated in the suet. Leave the oven on.
  3. To sterilise the jars, wash them and their lids in hot, soapy water really well and dry them thoroughly with a clean tea towel. Arrange the jars and lids on a baking tray and transfer to the oven for 5 minutes.
  4. Fill the jars with the mincemeat and seal whilst both are still warm to create a firm seal. Store in a cool, dry place until ready to use.
