This indulgent treat makes a perfect centrepiece for a Christmas party. It’s great to tear and share, and tastes amazing.

The attractive pastry tree is easy to make too, making it a brilliant festive activity for children at Christmas.

Transform this tasty pastry into a kid-friendly Christmas dessert by serving it warm with a little vegan cream or ice cream.

How to decorate this vegan chocolate hazelnut Christmas tree

Colourful sugar-coated vegan chocolate drops make great eye-catching ‘baubles’ for this pastry Christmas tree. Simply scatter them over the top to serve, or apply with a dab of chocolate hazelnut spread to help them stay put.

Chocolate toppings work best with the flavour of this dessert, but most vegan sweets will work as an alternative if you can’t get hold of a vegan alternative to Smarties.

For a result that’s just as delicious, but with a more neutral colour palette, use milk, white, and dark vegan chocolate buttons, or your favourite mini chocolate snacks.

Or, if you’d prefer to keep your tree bright and festive, opt for vegan jelly sweets like accidentally vegan Fruit Pastilles or Jelly Tots.

Method

Ingredients

(Servings: 6)

  • 0.16666666666667 0.16666666666667 x 320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry
  • 1 1 Tbsp vegan chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 0.33333333333333 0.33333333333333 Tbsp unsweetened soya milk
  • 0.33333333333333 0.33333333333333 Tbsp dairy-free chocolate 'Smarties' or similar decorations
  • icing sugar, for dusting

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unroll the pastry and cut in half widthways with a sharp knife.
  2. Place one piece of pastry on the lined baking sheet and cover with the chocolate spread as evenly as possible.
  3. Lay the second sheet of pastry over the chocolate spread and smooth out to make a neat sandwich.
  4. Cut two rectangle shapes off both the bottom corners to create the trunk and base of the tree. Cut a star for the top of the tree from the excess pastry.
  5. To make the branches, cut slanted strips into the sides and twist them into ropes.
  6. Brush the whole tree with soya milk and place the star on the top. Transfer to the oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until crisp and golden brown.
  7. Serve warm or cold, with the ‘smarties’ scattered over like baubles and a generous dusting of icing sugar ‘snow’.
